Chinese Students’ CSC Imperial Scholarships, UK, 2014

Imperial College London and China Scholarship Council are announcing admissions to PhD scholarships for Chinese students. These scholarships are for pursuing PhD programme at Imperial College London in UK, in any subject area offered by Imperial although the majority of awards will be in non-clinical areas. There are 15 full scholarships per year and will support either three years of study for a PhD or four years in certain cases where the student is required to undertake a one year postgraduate degree prior to beginning their PhD. It is to be acquired by the nationals of China and that at UK.

Information:-

  • About the eligibility:-

Chinese students with a strong academic background.

-Students must hold a PR Chinese passport (applicants from Hong Kong or Taiwan are not eligible).

-Applicants can either be resident in China at the time of application or studying overseas. Students with prior experience of studying overseas (including in the UK) are eligible to apply. Chinese Imperial graduates/Masters students are therefore eligible for the scheme.

  • About the awards:-
  1. There are 15 full scholarships per year available for students to start a PhD.

  1. Scholarships will support either three years of study for a PhD or four years in certain cases where the student is required to undertake a one year postgraduate degree prior to beginning their PhD.

  1. Each scholarship covers:

-International tuition fees

-Maintenance allowance equal to Imperial’s minimum stipend allowance in any given year.  For 2013/14, this is £15,726 per year

-Up to £1,000 per year to attend conferences and cover other costs associated with their PhD

-One economy class return journey to China

  1. Between April and July, CSC will review and approve the scholarships. After this, students will be informed of the final outcome of their application and issued with a formal CSC Imperial Scholarship letter.
  • About the applying procedure and the Deadline:-
  1. Prospective scholars must follow all of the following steps in this order:

-Prospective PhD students should approach individual Imperial departments and supervisors with details of their proposed project.  It is essential that students make contact with departments/supervisors before submitting a PhD application.

-Once it has been established that the project is viable and the supervisor(s) is able and willing to supervise the student, the student should submit a PhD application to Imperial, following standard College procedure.

-They recommend that students sit an IELTS or TOEFL test as soon as they apply to Imperial if they do not already meet the College’s English Language requirements.

-Imperial’s Registry will process the application and either reject it or issue a formal conditional/unconditional offer of a PhD place.  The outstanding condition is likely to be receipt of a satisfactory Masters qualification (if the applicant is a current Masters student). It can take 6-8 weeks for PhD applications to be processed.

-Once applicants have an offer, they must complete a CSC Imperial Scholarship Application Form. The form is available from departmental postgraduate administrators or your supervisor. Once complete the form should be submitted to the International Office.

-In some cases students may not have received an offer by the College deadline. Therefore, if necessary, applications can be considered by the scholarship panel at the same time as being processed by Departments/Registry. However, applicants must still have approval from their supervisor and head of department.

  1. The application deadline is 31st January, 2014.
